The incident took place in Windham County around 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, March 22 in Willimantic.

According to the Willimantic Fire Department, firefighters responded to a fire at 1163 Main St., for a structure fire on the second floor of a building.

When they arrived, they found multiple occupants had sustained injuries, including a man who jumped from a second-floor window into the back of a quick-thinking Town of Griswold dump truck driver who saw the man and backed up his truck so the man could jump, the department said.

Mutual Aid units removed the victim from the truck and he was transported to a hospital for smoke inhalation and burns.

The truck driver is reportedly a volunteer firefighter who knew he had to help when he saw what was happening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
